The Rubbish Film Festival Cork Regional Awards, held on 26th March, brought together Transition Year students from across the county for a vibrant celebration of creativity and climate action.
Hosted at Fota Wildlife Park’s Education, Conservation and Research Centre in partnership with Cork City and County Councils, the event showcased a series of powerful one-minute films tackling issues such as sustainability, waste reduction and environmental responsibility. As highlighted by Cork County Council’s coverage of the event, the Awards emphasised not only technical filmmaking skills but also the growing confidence of young people in communicating solutions for real-world environmental challenges.
Coverage from Cork’s 96FM further underlines the scale and impact of the event, with students from 22 schools participating in workshops before presenting their final films at the awards ceremony. Winning entries – including Best Film awards for Coláiste Pobail Bheanntraí and St. Angela’s College – demonstrated both creativity and a strong commitment to climate awareness, while additional categories recognised poster design and especially impactful storytelling.
The Regional Awards ceremony in Cork forms part of the nation-wide Rubbish Film Festival programme, which engages thousands of students each year, empowering them to use digital storytelling as a tool for environmental advocacy and aligning with broader sustainability goals.
